A well-built dog house gives your pet a dry, draft-free retreat from summer heat and winter cold. It is a quick, satisfying woodworking project, and with a few smart choices you can build one that is genuinely comfortable rather than just decorative. Here is how to do it right.
Size it to your dog
A dog house should be snug, not huge – dogs stay warmer in a space that traps their body heat. As a guide, the interior should let your dog stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably, and no more:
- Height: a few inches taller than your dog at the shoulders.
- Depth and width: about 1.2 times your dog’s length, nose to tail base.
- Doorway: tall enough to enter with head slightly lowered, which helps block wind.
Build for the weather
The details that make a dog house comfortable year-round:
- Raise it off the ground on feet or a base so cold and damp do not seep up through the floor.
- Insulate the walls, floor and roof in cold climates – a two-layer wall with foam or rigid insulation between makes a huge difference.
- Offset the door to one side and add a small internal baffle so wind cannot blow straight onto your dog.
- Slope the roof to shed rain, and add an overhang to keep the doorway dry.
Tools and materials
Tools: circular saw, drill/driver, tape measure, square and a level. Materials: exterior plywood, framing lumber, pressure-treated lumber for the base, roofing, rigid foam insulation (optional), exterior screws and a pet-safe exterior finish.
Step-by-step build
1. Floor and base
Build an insulated, raised floor so it sits off the ground. Seal the underside against moisture.
2. Walls
Frame and sheath the walls, adding insulation between an inner and outer skin if you are building for cold weather. Cut the offset doorway.
3. Roof
Add a sloped or hinged roof with an overhang. A hinged, liftable roof makes cleaning easy.
4. Finish safely
Sand every edge, round the doorway, and finish with a non-toxic, pet-safe exterior paint or stain. Let it cure fully before your dog moves in.
Comfort upgrades
- Add a removable, washable bed or straw bedding for warmth.
- A vinyl or canvas door flap blocks wind while still letting your dog come and go.
- Place the house in shade in summer and a sheltered, sunny spot in winter.
