Getting the size right is the single most important decision when building a chicken coop. Too small and your hens get stressed, peck each other, and lay fewer eggs; too large and it is harder to keep warm in winter. Here is exactly how to size a coop – and how many chickens fit in the most common coop dimensions.
The golden rule: space per bird
For standard-size hens, plan for:
- 2 to 4 square feet of coop (indoor) space per bird – use the higher end in cold climates or if birds are confined a lot.
- 8 to 10 square feet of run (outdoor) space per bird.
- One nesting box per 3 to 4 hens, and about 8 to 10 inches of roosting bar per bird.
Bantams need a bit less; large or heavily confined breeds need more. When in doubt, size up – flocks almost always grow.

So a 12×12 coop comfortably holds roughly 36 to 72 hens depending on breed and how much time they spend in the run – it is closer to a small barn than a backyard starter coop. Most families with a handful of hens are well served by a 4×8 or 6×8.
Do not forget the run
Coop square footage is only half the equation. Hens spend most of the day in the run, so give them 8 to 10 square feet each out there. A generous, predator-proof run (hardware cloth, not chicken wire) does more for flock health and egg production than almost anything else.
Common sizing mistakes
- Building too small “for now.” You will add birds. Size for the flock you will have in two years.
- Skimping on ventilation. Even a well-sized coop needs cross-ventilation near the roof to stay dry and healthy.
- Too few nesting boxes or roost space, which causes squabbling and dirty eggs.
